Dynamic transformer control

Dynamic Transformer Control

By bringing live transformer and surrounding ambient temperatures into network operation and control, substation transformers can be dynamically rated in order to improve transformer usage, safety and reliability. Megavar recently finished just such a project, involving secondary design, installation and commissioning of remote temperature monitoring and controls at three TasNetworks substations sites in Southern and Western Tasmania. The new cooling fans (pictured), temperature indicators, probes, sensors and controls enable existing firm ratings to be increased and short term rating to be exceeded, thereby enabling the operator to more flexibly manage network demand.
