SF6 Leak Detection - IR Imaging

Sulfur hexafluoride (SF6) is an excellent insulating gas for high voltage equipment and is used extensively worldwide for this purpose. Unfortunately, the gas is an environmental pollutant posing a risk to the ozone layer, with a global warming potential of 23,900 times that of CO2.

Traditionally leaks have been detected using a “sniffer” device to localise the leak location. However, the sniffer can sometimes be difficult to use in tight locations and as it is a contact type instrument, requiring the user to take the apparatus out of service to “sniff” for leaks near the high voltage circuit.

Megavar utilises a state of the art Flir GF306 camera to scan the apparatus more rapidly and from a safe distance. Infrared displays a gas leak as a plume of vapour in the infrared image.

Other applications for the camera include detection of the following gases:

  • Anhydrous Ammonia
  • Acetic Acid
  • Chlorine Dioxide
  • Ethyl Cyanocrylate
  • Ethylene
  • FREON-12
  • Methyl Ethyl Ketone

Megavar provides gas leak detection services Australia-wide.
